USDA: US Beef Imports to Japan at Risk

USDA says a trade deal between Japan and Australia could come at the expense of U.S. beef exports to Japan. Meatingplace reports that the deal means the United States is at risk of losing $100 million in exports.  USDA’s Economic Research Service released a report on the trade agreement’s impact, saying The Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement may reduce U.S. imports to Japan by $100 million while increasing Australian imports by more than the same amount. However, if Japan would open its beef market to the United States as it did with Australia, USDA projects a $130 million gain in beef imports to Japan. Japan currently supplies less than 40 percent of its beef demand through domestic production.
