Russia plans to ban imports of corn and soybeans from the U.S. effective February 15th. The country cites phytosanitary concerns for the decision and the risk of delivering GMO products into Russia. However, Russia does not buy U.S. corn in a traditional sense. Pro Farmer’s First Thing Today reports the corn in question is used for popcorn. Russia is a buyer of U.S. soybeans, however, a small one. In the 2014-15 marketing year, Russia imported 316,000 metric tons of soybeans from the United States. In the current marketing year, the country has imported 395,000 metric tons of U.S. soybeans, making it the 10th largest buyer overall.
