As Senate Agriculture Chairman Pat Roberts looks to find middle ground and bipartisan support to his GMO labeling bill, Politico reports Democratic Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders may be the toughest obstacle to the bill. Sanders is Vermont’s junior Senator and in a statement says “the overwhelming majority of Americans favor GMO labeling," adding further "we cannot allow the interests of Monsanto and other multi-national food industry corporations to prevail.” Vermont will become the first state to enact a mandatory labeling law in July if Congress does not act to make a federal law. Roberts says talks to reach an agreement that would still pre-empt Vermont’s labeling law are ongoing. The House last year passed a similar bill, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015, but the Senate did not take action on the measure. The Senate Agriculture Committee will markup the new bill on Thursday.
