(Dow Jones) -- Monsanto kicks off a two-day event focused on its research and development pipeline by attempting to defuse ongoing chatter about a potential deal with Bayer or somebody else. CEO Hugh Grant says Monsanto remains open to deal discussions with the German firm and that they're are ongoing as Monsanto also explores alternative deals with unnamed "others." That's more or less the same as what he said in late June, and today Grant also includes the typical disclaimer that no deal can be assured. Monsanto, has rejected deal proposals from Bayer several times since mid-May.
