Trade negotiations between the United States and India appear to have stalled, with India’s finance minister saying the two sides may have reached a point where further concessions are difficult. India Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (Nir-MAH-lah SITH-hah-rah-mahn) said negotiations are continuing, but both countries have reached a “plateau” in the give-and-take. Her comments followed U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s statement last week that a trade agreement was not imminent. The talks include efforts to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with India and expand American access to the Indian market. USTR says the U.S. goods trade deficit with India reached $58.4 billion in 2025, up nearly 28 percent from the previous year. For U.S. agriculture, a trade agreement could affect market access and opportunities for farm exports to India. But with both sides still divided over key issues, the timing of a final deal remains uncertain.
