Louisiana Flooding Losses could top $15 Million

The overabundance of rainfall which caused flooding in Louisiana could costs farmers $15 million. The Louisiana State University AgCenter says the corn losses alone in the state are estimated between three and four million dollars. Floodwaters from the March rains covered around 40,000 acres of corn in the state. The AgCenter says those farmers in north Louisiana have few days remaining to replant in the ideal time window. Many of those fields, however, remain underwater and will likely not dry out before the middle of this month. Earlier this year, experts forecasted Louisiana would increase corn acres by 500,000. That number is trending downward now because of the wet conditions. Louisiana's annual corn crop is valued at $266 million. The AgCenter also says between 400 and 500 cattle died in the flooding, and some pasture land remains under water.
