The National Pork Producers Council remains hopeful a change in leadership for Argentina will lead the country to lift its ban on U.S. pork. Argentine President-elect Mauricio Macri won a run-off election last month over the country’s former vice president. Macri will be sworn in, along with his cabinet, on Thursday. He’s been described as a “pro-business” candidate and is a supporter of trade. Macri is expected to be a significant change compared to the last president of Argentina who maintained some protectionist measures that resulted in a de facto ban on U.S. pork exports. The National Pork Producers Council says it’s been working with USDA in negotiating an export certificate with Argentina that would open its market. Progress on those talks was slow under the old leadership but is expected to move faster with Marci as the country’s leader.
