Senate Aide Says Short-term Continuing Resolution Necessary

Negotiations continue on the omnibus spending bill, but a Senate Republican aide told The Hagstrom Report that a short-term continuing resolution is appearing more necessary. That’s because negotiations have not wrapped up on completing the omnibus bill, thanks in large part to agriculture provisions lawmakers are trying to attach to the bill. There have been rumors that the Senate is putting pressure on the House to finish as quickly as possible while House leaders want to take a slower approach, but still to finish by next Friday when the House is scheduled to leave. A key member of the House Agriculture Committee today said that it is impossible to plan for this weekend because it possible that leadership will keep members in Washington to put pressure on them to finish the agreement. Repeal of Country-of-Origin labeling, one of the potential riders to the spending bill, is thought by some to be needed by the end of this year to prevent tariffs from Mexico and Canada. But without the chance of being attached to the omnibus bill, the changes of repeal appear slim before 2016.
