The first-ever alfalfa checkoff, funded through a $1/bag assessment, will kick off in January. The program, The U.S. Alfalfa Farmer Research Initiative, hopes to raise at least $500,000 that can be targeted toward alfalfa research.“The unique thing about the program is that 100% of the funds raised will be used to support public research into alfalfa and alfalfa forage systems, and it will be driven by the alfalfa industry, primarily farmers,” says Beth Nelson, National Alfalfa and Forage Alliance president.A call for research proposals will go out this spring, and the first research grants will be awarded in July, says Nelson.
