Vermont Labeling Law Makes Kosher Foods Harder to Find

Amid the Vermont labeling law and despite the grace period until the end of the year, since put in place this month, consumers say kosher foods are harder to find on store shelves. According to the Genetic Literacy Project, Vermont’s GMO labeling law appears to be forcing kosher foods off store shelves as the small companies that manufacture the foods decide not to re-label their packaging just for Vermont. Roughly 3,000 items were pulled off grocery store shelves as the GMO labeling law went into effect. However, federal action is imminent with a vote in the U.S. House expected this week following a rules committee meeting Tuesday. The bill that passed the Senate, making GMO labeling mandatory across the nation preempts state laws and gives food companies more time to comply. The House is expected to consider the bill “as is” with no time left for amendments before heading off on summer recess.
