(Dow Jones) -- Facial-recognition software is
being used to monitor lawbreakers in China and create amusing selfie-art
mashups for social-media networks, but it's yet to catch on among farm
animals. Agricultural conglomerate Cargill aims to change that, making
an investment in Dublin-based "machine vision" developer Cainthus. The
companies aspire to use Cainthus' technology on dairy cows, identifying
animals by their faces and hides to keep tabs on how regularly cows eat
and drink, which could give farmers early clues that animals are sick or
injured.
