(Dow Jones) -- Sugar growers in Brazil's
center-south states will produce less sugar cane in the 2018-2019 season
than in the previous season, according to Archer Consulting. The
region's farms will grow 580 million metric tons of cane in the upcoming
season, a slight decline from the previous season's exceptional output,
Archer said. The center-south produced 588.7 million metric tons in
2017-2018, according to Brazilian crop agency Conab's December estimate.
The region's cane fields are also aging, which reduces output, Archer
said. Sugar mills will produce 30.5 million tons of sugar in 2018-2019
and 26.5 billion liters of ethanol, according to Archer's forecast.
Brazil is the world's biggest producer and exporter of sugar, and the
center-south region produces about 90% of the country's cane.
