First US Beef Shipment from Brazil In Two Decades Arrived Last Week
The first shipment of beef from Brazil to the U.S. in nearly two decades arrived Thursday in the Port of Philadelphia, according to a noticeposted by the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority.Sao Paulo-based JBS S.A.’s shipment of fresh beef is the first since the U.S. officially openedto Brazilian beef in August after 17 years of negotiations between the two countries. That decision followed USDA’s recent finding that the Brazil’s food safety system is equivalent to that of the U.S.JBS is one of a handful of Brazilian processors that the USDA has listed as eligible to export to the U.S. Others with product on the way here are Marfrig and Minerva.The agreement, according to the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, has it that 3,000 pounds of Brazilian beef will be shipped monthly via the Port of Itapoá to the United States.
