Winter Wheat Production in the Northwest Region up 12 percent from Last Year

Based on May 1, 2016 conditions, production of winter wheat in Idaho is forecast at 58.8 million bushels, up 2 percent from 2015. Yield is expected to average 84.0 bushels per acre, up 2 bushel from last year. Growers planted an estimated 750,000 acres in the fall of 2015, unchanged from the previous year. Harvested acres are forecast at 700,000 acres, unchanged from a year ago.

In Oregon, production is forecast at 38.5 million bushels, up 11 percent from 2015. Yield is expected to average 57.0 bushels per acre, up 10 bushel from last year. Growers planted an estimated 680,000 acres in the fall of 2015, down 60,000 acres from the previous year. Growers expect to harvest 675,000 acres, a decrease of 60,000 acres from the previous year

In Washington, production is forecast at 106 million bushels, up 19 percent from 2015. Yield is expected to average 64.0 million bushel per acres, up 8 bushel from the previous year. Growers planted an estimated 1.70 million acres in the fall of 2015, up 50,000 acres from the previous year. Harvested acres are forecast at 1.65 million acres, an increase of 60,000 acres from 2015.

Nationally, production is expected to be 1.43 billion bushels, up 4 percent from 2015. Yield is forecast at 47.8 bushels per acre, up 5.3 bushel from last year. Growers planted an estimated 36.2 million acres in the fall of 2015, down 3.2 million acres the previous year. Harvested acres are forecast at 29.8 million acres, down 2.4 million acres from 2015.

U.S. White Winter wheat production is forecast at 208 million bushels, up 13 percent from last year. Of this total, 17 million bushels are Hard White and 191 million bushels are Soft White. U.S. Hard Red Winter, at 863 million bushels, is up 4 percent from 2015. Soft Red Winter, at 356 million bushels, is down slightly from 2015.
