General Mills Plans to Double Organic Acreage

General Mills plans to more than double organic acreage the company uses to source ingredients. Company leaders now expect to meet its goal of 250,000 organic acres by 2019. General Mills says the increased acreage is directly linked to the company's goals to grow net sales from its natural and organic products. The company expects organic sales to reach $1 billion by 2019, a full year ahead of its target. General Mills has increased the organic acreage it supports by 120 percent since 2009. The company says it is now among the top five organic ingredient purchasers and the second largest buyer of organic fruits and vegetables in the North American packaged food sector.
