US-China Trade Talks Will Take Place This Week
Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will come to Washington May 15 to 19 for talks with US officials, with members of his team in Washington the past few days to prepare for the session. As of late last week, Liu's exact plans were uncertain. As the week closed last week, China's ambassador to the U.S. was upbeat on working out trade policy issues. A deal between the U.S. and China could be reached quickly even though recent talks in Beijing signaled otherwise, said Cui Tianki. "I think if both sides could make real efforts, we don’t need a deadline," he said Friday at an event put on by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “We could come to an agreement very quickly, but it will require effort from both sides."While noting the two sides may not be able to solve all the issues immediately, he noted they will "address the short-term problems but also look at the long-term structural problems. We’ll be able to do that."
