US Still Wants Further Negotiations With China On Trade
The tit-for-tat announcements by the US and China on Friday have not dashed optimism from the US for negotiations with China."Our hope is that it does not lead to a rash reaction from China," US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer said in an interview with the Fox Business Network after the tariffs were announced. "We hope that this leads to further negotiations and we hope it leads to China changing its policies."Those comments came before the White House announced Monday that President Donald Trump wants to place 10% tariffs on an additional $200 billion in imports from China.A senior Trump administration official said the U.S. is looking for structural changes to the way China deals with technology. The administration wants Beijing to stop forcing American firms to transfer know-how.Beijing has signaled it will not accept major changes to its Made-in-China 2025 blueprint, which lays out how the Asian nation plans to lead in emerging industries such as artificial intelligence.
