President Donald Trump said he wants to begin trade talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement

President Donald Trump said he wants to begin trade talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as soon as possible, according to media reports.Trump, who met with U.S. House and Senate legislators at the White House on Thursday, noted U.S. law requires that he provide 90 days’ notice to Congress before starting any trade negotiation, meaning talks could begin as early as May.The president indicated he is open to different approaches to revising the agreement.“I don’t care if it’s a renovation of NAFTA or a brand new NAFTA,” but we do have to make it fair,” Trump was quoted as saying.Agence France-Presse reported that Mexico is looking to expand its trade ties with Europe and Asia, having agreed with the European Union this week to speed up negotiations to modernize an existing free trade pact.More than 130 agricultural trade groups and companies including Cargill Inc., JBS USA and Tyson Foods Inc. last month sent a letter to Trump asking him to modernize NAFTA in a way that expands on gains it helped the sector achieve.
