Japan and the U.S. are working on an outline for a trade deal in September, the Nikkei newspaper reported, citing sources close to the negotiations.
Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Friday headway was made and that the goal was in sight, the Nikkei said. Progress may be announced at the Group of Seven summit of advanced nations in France August 24-26, the paper said.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Motegi are expected to meet again around that time, according media reports.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is slated to meet President Donald Trump when the Japanese leader visits the U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly in late September.
