Food Safety Guidelines After Hurricane Debby

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack directed the USDA to aid recovery efforts for farmers, ranchers, and residents affected by Hurricane Debby, which continues tracking up the East Coast. The Food Safety and Inspection Service says during a power outage, a refrigerator will keep food at a safe temperature for up to four hours. A full freezer will hold a safe temperature for about 48 hours or 24 hours if it’s half full. Drink only bottled water that hasn’t been in contact with flood water. Screw caps aren’t waterproof, so discard any bottled water that may have contacted flood water. Discard any food and beverages that aren’t in a waterproof container if there’s any chance it’s contacted flood water. Undamaged, commercially prepared foods in all-metal cans and retort pouches such as flexible, shelf-stable juice or seafood pouches can be saved by following FSIS website instructions.
