Winter Wheat Production in the Northwest Region down 9 percent from Last Year Based on May 1, 2017 conditions, production of winter wheat in Idaho was forecast at 58.7 million bushels, down 12 percent from 2016. Yield was expected to average 85.0 bushels per acre, down 9.0 bushels from last year. Growers planted an estimated 730,000 acres in the fall of 2016, down 30,000 acres from the previous year. Harvested acres were forecast at 690,000 acres, down 20,000 acres from a year ago. In Oregon, production was forecast at 41.6 million bushels, up 17 percent from 2016. Yield was expected to average 59.0 bushels per acre, up 9.00 bushel from last year. Growers planted an estimated 710,000 acres in the fall of 2016, down 10,000 acres from the previous year. Growers expected to harvest 705,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from the previous year. In Washington, production was forecast at 111 million bushels, down 15 percent from 2016. Yield was expected to average 67.0 bushels per acre, down 11 bushels from the previous year. Growers planted an estimated 1.7 million acres in the fall of 2016, unchanged from the previous year. Harvested acres were forecast at 1.66 million acres, down 10,000 acres from 2016. Nationally, production was expected to be 1.25 billion bushels, down 25 percent from 2016. Yield was forecast at 48.8 bushels per acre, down 6.5 bushel from last year. Growers planted an estimated 32.7 million acres in the fall of 2016, down 3.4 million acres from the previous year. Harvested acres were forecast at 25.6 million acres, down 4.7 million acres from 2016. U.S. White Winter wheat production was forecast at 212 million bushels, down 13 percent from last year. Of this total, 16.8 million bushels were Hard White and 195 million bushels were Soft White. U.S. Hard Red Winter, at 737 million bushels, was down 32 percent from 2016. Soft Red Winter, at 296 million bushels, was down 14 percent from 2016.
